A national survey of students has placed Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) as the most highly rated specialist arts, design and media university in the UK. In the year NUA attained university status, it has scored higher than all other specialist higher education institutions providing creative arts focused degrees nationwide, with an overall student satisfaction rating of 88%, according to Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) benchmark data published today.
The independent annual survey commissioned by HEFCE canvases the opinions of final year undergraduates in all universities asking for ‘honest feedback on what studying at the institution is like’. NUA topped the national university average in all eight categories measured by the NSS with particularly positive results for its ‘learning resources’, ‘teaching’ and ‘academic support’.

Neil Powell, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Student Experience) at NUA, says: “What makes these results so rewarding is that the feedback comes from our own students who know best what it is like to study here. The University has made significant investments in its campus and facilities in recent years with new state-of-the-art studios for design, illustration, architecture and fashion and extensive industry-standard media facilities for animation, film, games art and photography. These results indicate that students are seeing the benefits from this investment and rate NUA as a top institution at which to study.”
Results by course reveal strong satisfaction across the board, in some cases exceptionally so. The city-centre based University’s BA (Hons) Fashion course received an incredible 100% overall satisfaction rate from graduating students, while BA (Hons) Textile Design was just behind on 97% overall satisfaction. NUA was also recently rated as the best specialist institution for arts and design subjects in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2013 and is reporting a 17% increase in applications in the most competitive year yet for places.
NUA’s above-average results were all the more impressive for having stayed ahead of an overall improvement in the national average scores reported by the NSS, with all eight categories seeing scores improved or staying the same.
Universities Minister David Willetts said: “It is very encouraging to see student satisfaction is continuing to rise. University is a hugely enjoyable and life-enhancing experience for most students, as this survey shows. The National Student Survey plays an important role in providing students with information to help them make choices about higher education. It can also help universities to understand how they can offer students the best experience.”
