National art writing competition names Norwich student winner

Norwich student Laura Dennis has been announced as a winner of a national prize for writing on the subject of art curation. Laura, who is studying MA Curation at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), is one of three winners of the Axisweb Curated Selection Prize, which was selected by a jury including Sarah Martin, the Head of Exhibitions at Turner Contemporary.

Laura’s writing will be published on the Axisweb website, an online resource for UK contemporary art which provides information about artists, curators, and the art scene, as well as a webzine and discussion articles. She has also won a cash prize, free Art Professional membership to Axisweb and online promotion for her course at NUA.

Laura says: “I’m thrilled to have won this award. I’m delighted that the judging panel thought that my curatorial ideas would appeal to the Axisweb community, and I also feel more confident about my potential as a future curator.

“I think that NUA is an incredibly dynamic place – there is a strong vision and very engaged staff and students. It’s an exciting place to be. I particularly like the breadth in how curating is understood at NUA. And being able to work with the Arts Council Collection on our end of year show is a real gem of an opportunity!”

Paul Fieldsend-Danks, MA Leader at NUA, says: “We’re delighted for Laura, winning this prize is a great personal achievement and Axisweb have a great reputation in the promotion of contemporary art and curatorial practice in the UK. External engagement is a focus for our postgraduate programmes and the University positively encourages students in submitting entries for national and international competitions. To be able to announce another winner is a positive reflection on what we are achieving at NUA.”
