MA Communication Design

My research centers on an immersive experience for children and adults that revolves around the themes of exploration, discovery and navigation. ‘The Midnight Atlas’ is a self-authored story that invites its readers to explore and bring to life a multitude of settings, each of which is inspired both from real life observation as well as imagined places. The title aims to provoke a childlike sense of excitement, intrigue and mystery linked to the connotations of ‘Midnight’ whilst also hinting at the prospect of discovery linked with ‘atlas’. The narrative takes inspiration from the writing styles of ‘ergodic literature’ and ‘concrete poetry’ where the text encourages playful reading that reflects the fundamental themes of the narrative. Using elements such as interactive book pages, 3D models and projection, the body of work becomes a collective and interactive experience – unique and different to each individual’s perception of place.
