Edmund Back

MA Communication Design

Using alternative photographic techniques, I create unconventional visual narratives that focus on place, object and form inspired by historical and social contexts. My research is led by an interest in metaphor, elements of psychology such as dream interpretation and the relationship between medium, emotion and subject matter. The resulting practice is led by the exploration of the visual language of photography and the dialogue between concept, process and metaphor.

My research also investigates the juxtaposition between the materiality of the process and subject. The roots of photography as a science influences my experimental approach to image making and I use photographic techniques developed by some of the pioneers of the medium including Fox Talbot and Anna Atkins. Like Adam Fuss my practice relies on an element of chance that is inherent to traditional darkroom photography techniques and attempts to break out of the familiar “syntax” of the photograph.

Investigating the importance of the book as an object and photography as narrative is another research strand, particularly the production of ‘indie’ photo books and the self-publishing movement.
