MA Moving Image and Sound
My research as a concept artist, illustrator and animator focuses on a few key areas, the most influential being video games design (Bioshock, Borderlands and dead space), animated films (eg. Coraline, Paranorman and 9) and Fantasy arts. My work focuses mainly on concept art and addresses character, environment and storytelling, which I use as a means of depicting parallel realities. I have been creating visual animated landscapes designed to give a sense of surroundings and overall ambiance and collecting sound recordings to create my own sound art.
These are populated by odd characters and archetypes drawn from movies and the supernatural in order to create imaginative and inspiring concept art for film, game and animation. Form, colour and composition are also explored using both hand drawn and digital media. My current project, Icarus and the Domes, is a story that I have been crafting and developing in order to investigate the roles played by concept art and storyboarding as building blocks in storytelling. Drawing on ideas from early works of dystopian fiction such as H.G. Wells (Time Machine), Aldous Huxley (Brave New World) and George Orwell (Nineteen Eighty- Four). This work looks at issues such as social division and inequality in a dystopian future.
