VFX students discover the secret qualities that make great VFX artists

In May 2017, our BA (Hons) VFX Year One students took part in a workshop to decide on what they felt were the top aptitudes or qualities needed by great VFX Artists. They looked at the Creative Skillset “Core Skills of VFX” Handbook and were asked to think about recent guest speakers and great examples of VFX work they’d seen over the year, and list the most important aptitudes or behaviours that great VFX artists need. VFX is as much about mindset as it is about the tech!
The top five priorities were:

  • Being able to turn ideas into photo-real images.
  • Be able to communicate effectively in other areas of the VFX pipeline.
  • Have dedication and discipline to learn 3D or 2D software.
  • Be able to stay self-motivated and focus on a VFX project.
  • Be able to read and interpret feedback from a dailies session.

However the team thought these more general behaviours would be needed to:

  • Willingness to adapt to new situations.
  • Be able to effectively respond to feedback.
  • Be able to work under pressure.
  • Good problem solving skills; able to find creative solutions to problems.
  • Be able to balance creativity and practicality.
  • Be able to work in groups and come up with ideas that fool the eye.
  • Don’t get attached to your art work.
  • Obeying orders; listening to creative decisions from the producer.
  • Not taking criticism to heart.
  • Being able to set yourself goals.
  • Being able to use a multitude of programs rather than feeling comfortable in just one.
  • Use real life references effectively.

Do you agree? Some are harder to master than others, but we think our students are off to a flying start.
