James Smith

Course Leader

James Smith

James is Course Leader BA (Hons) Photography at NUA. He comes from a commercial photographic background that includes industrial photography, editorial content for the specialist rock climbing market and work for design agencies. Work undertaken for these companies has involved producing images for literature to promote clients ranging from youth development initiatives to business lawyers. He has held the position of the British Mountaineering Councils official photographer, covering events such as the finals of the World Climbing Championship in Birmingham. James’s research has focussed on the implementation of Governmental education policy and the relationship between the photographic industry and education. Read James’s staff profile.

James Cant

James works part-time across both the BA and MA in Photography. He has been a professional photographer since 1995 producing national and international campaigns for some of the UK’s top advertising agencies. His portraits have appeared in numerous UK and overseas magazine titles. His work has been shown by the Photographers Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery as well as being widely exhibited elsewhere in the UK and abroad. Juneko Haga

Juneko graduated from the BA (Hons) Documentary Photography course at University of Wales, Newport with a First class honours degree and was awarded with a Distinction for her PGCE at Reading University. Juneko has worked as a key member of the course team since 2010. Her teaching and practice are informed by her experience of working in an advertising agency, her freelance work and a diverse range of educational and community engagement work she has carried out in private and public sectors. Ross Trevail

Ross who continues to work as a commercial photographer and exhibit his own personal projects, has joined NUA as a lecturer in photography. His holistic teaching style is primarily focused on creating a personal voice and expression. Read Ross’s staff profile.



Katy White

Katy is a lecturer on the BA photography course at NUA. She initially began her career working as a commercial photographers assistant in London, assisting on shoots both in the UK and abroad for clients including Purina, Lloyds and Andrex and her own commissions have involved working with charities including Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Her work has been selected for the Association of Photographers Open Awards and she is currently studying an MA in photojournalism and documentary photography. Read Katy’s staff profile.

Gretchen Geraets

As a lecturer in photography, Gretchen’s teaching encourages students to learn through practical experience and real world scenarios. Gretchen supports students through both the technical application of photography; its industry context and applications, and encourages students to develop their own practice and personality in their work. Her photography has been shown in art spaces, and Gretchen has contributed to public discussion, delivered workshops and artist talks. Read Gretchen’s staff profile.
