NUA launches free online visual effects course

Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) has worked with the industry skills body for the Creative Industries, Creative Skillset, and one of the world’s largest visual effects companies, MPC, to create a free online course called “Visual Effects for Guerrilla Filmmakers”.

Starting on 8 February 2016, the course builds on the success of NUA’s recently established BA (Hons) VFX degree course and is designed with low/no budget and so called ‘Guerrilla’ filmmakers in mind. It shows how convincing visual effects can be created without big budgets, with a focus on practical tips and detailed software tutorials.

The four-week course features advice and advanced techniques from global creative studio, MPC, as well as green screen, tracking and set extension techniques created by HitFilm expert, Simon Jones. With over 200,000 users worldwide, the free HitFilm software, made by FXHOME, is the industry standard for new filmmakers, also provide advice and advanced techniques on this course.

The “Visual Effects for Guerrilla Filmakers” course is one of a suite of eight, which has been developed for FutureLearn, following a £200,000 investment from Creative Skillset. All students can receive a Statement of Participation upon completing the course. To check out the other courses, please visit the Creative Skillset page on FutureLearn.

Saint John Walker, Course Leader in VFX, Norwich University of the Arts, said, “We know there’s an increasing demand from filmmakers to use VFX techniques so they can tell a wider range of stories. VFX shouldn’t distract from the story but enable the filmmaker to make great films. That’s what this course is for. It’s been built by the perfect mix of partners – really relevant VFX exercises from HitFilm combined with MPCs advice and insight into great films.”

Andrew Schlussel MPC’s Global Head of Training and Development, said, “MPC is pleased to contribute to this course. The high-end visual effects we do here are not typically accessible to the smaller, independent filmmaker. However, there is a great deal that is accessible these days, and the current generation of independent filmmakers are always pushing the envelope. The independent filmmakers of today will be directing the major visual effects features of tomorrow. If we can plant the seed now to help burgeoning directors appreciate and harness the power of visual effects today, it will grow the industry of tomorrow.”

Josh Davies, CEO of FXHOME, said, “We’re excited to partner with NUA and MPC on this FutureLearn online course. Our mission is to create the best tools for filmmakers. By providing students with free HitFilm software and collaborating on educational tools for this course, we hope that thousands of new filmmakers will be introduced to the incredible world of visual effects.” The “Visual Effects for Guerrilla Filmmakers” course starts on February 8th 2016. All students can receive a Statement of Participation upon completing the course. Once registered, you can learn at your own pace and in your own time. Register now.
