NUA Photography students celebrate multiple award success
BA (Hons) Photography graduate, Gemma Astbury won ‘Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2016’ at the Fujifilm UK Student Awards for her cross-processed submission of a Norfolk beach scene, ‘Happisburgh Fences’ (pictured) in response to the brief ‘shoot from the hip’. Gemma wins the top prize at the awards and receives £200 worth of Fujifilm film, a professional portfolio with Metroprint, a bespoke consultancy session with a specialist printer and a goody bag of Instax prizes. Competition sponsor, Metroprint’s Creative Director Steve Macleod said of Gemma’s winning entry, “At first glance the image feels ephemeral, disposable and transient. However, when studying it in more detail it evokes feelings of past times, memories and loss.”
Students and graduates from BA (Hons) Photography have also celebrated success at the prestigious Association of Photographers Student Awards 2016. Year 1 student Jo Cock won the AOP top prize of Best in Show whilst 2016 graduate Sian Oliver won best in ‘Things’ category. The awards ceremony took place at a packed Print Space Gallery in Shoreditch, London under the themes of People, Places or Things. Following Jo’s win of Best in Show, Jo took over the Association of Photography’s Instagram showcasing her work to their followers in February 2017.
