The Witness, as an experimental project bringing psychological and philosophical issue of personal identity into visual context, aims to engage with the viewers in the process of self-discovery. It reviews the interrelationship between social observation and spiritual progression. Based on the notion of public impression, our individuality is under the influence of the others, reshaping our core values and beliefs. While there is an outburst of advocators frantically claiming to embrace our own authenticity, this project examines the potentiality of self-reflection in another perspective. It expresses the essence of self- identity, which is ‘believing in yourself’ and ‘appraising public perception’ – critical judgement on your own. The project consists of two outcomes, including a black mirror box and a supporting documentation. The box will take every individual to a self- discovery journey, creating a spatial scenario of unintentional observation. The conceptual idea will be further interpreted in the documentation as a communicative purpose to trigger viewers’ responses. This is an exclusive visual experience to reconsider the truth of self-existence and identities.
