Jo Clarke

MA Textile Design

Using natural renewable materials and seeking indigenous sources where possible provides the impetus for Jo Clarke’s woven constructs. The weaves are inspired by the qualities found in the indigenous materials: repetition, strength in mass, organic growth, fragility and tactility.

Practice based research focuses on the juxtaposition of rigidity with flexibility in a series of constructed textile samples that emphasise the concordant relationships of the materials. Drawing on traditional repetitive weave processes associated with basketry accentuates the materiality of the pieces. Her work allows the inherent qualities of the materials used to be at the forefront of the considered forms.
