Welfare’s current practice resides within a military framework where he grapples with scenarios of combat, politics, the intellectual terrain of controlled spaces, and failed utopias. The work is informed through dialogue and the interplay of visual languages, referencing both mans struggle with the environment, and our faith placed in technology.

From a broad and multi disciplined practice, Welfare presents a series of outcomes in film, sculpture and drawing. The presence in the individual unconscious of a militarized existence, from our past, present and future, are represented through an inherited vocabulary of patterns, symbols, objects, technology and functionality. This is witnessed in the work ‘Arch-etype’, an expansive archive of military hardware, coding and paraphernalia, that serves as a model or type from which a range of derived objects are patterned.

Throughout Welfare’s practice, a number of recurring symbols or motifs invite broader speculation and reflection. References to compounds, archives, guided laser systems, satellite technologies and the Internet are deconstructed, exposing utilitarian and civilian constructs. Through careful consideration of materials and controlled environments, a poetic aesthetic emerges.
