MA Textile Design work by Lulu Horsfield

The foundation for my practice considers the ideas that surround the comfort of home. I am interested in reinterpreting the traditional ideas of patchwork and quilting through pattern into contemporary three-dimensional form and film.

My studio practice is multidisciplinary and unusually non-textile based, preferring the physical qualities of paper because of its opposing strength and fragility. Details of precise colour, texture, pattern and placement are at the centre of my practice and work together to create ideas of graphic rhythm.

Inspiration is through the process of drawing, photography and making collages within my own domestic landscape together with pattern consideration using significant objects and ephemera I have historically collected. The personal narrative to my work is about family, remembrance and matters close to the heart.

My practice also engages with the intimacy of the hand made and uses digital consideration to transform scale, pattern development and outcome. Current work considers innovation by repositioning ideas of traditional textile techniques into moving image using video-mapping technology.

My intention for the MA has been to diversify and extend my independent creative practice. My background includes illustration for editorial, fashion, music and moving image, with earlier work shown at Tate Britain that has informed my current practice.
