MA Moving Image and Sound work by Joe Murphy

My work focuses on nostalgia, the childlike need to physically interact with things in order to understand how everything works. My Masters course work started in animation, which was me personally getting to grips with puppetry and exploring that. Recently I’ve focused on creating digital interfaces, which allow a user to control a specific output, be it audio or video. For example, a recent project involved a step sequencer, which allowed the user to create music by marking off points on a grid. This grid would then trigger notes from a simple digital synthesizer, then pass that information through a simple visualiser which reacts to certain parameters of the audio. Interaction is key in these works, the user creates his or her own work and develops their own understanding of what they are doing. Whether or not they get to the conclusions I did by using the piece is irrelevant, the aim is to have some fun and trigger creativity.
