MA Moving Image and Sound work by Andrew Parsons

My practice looks at the idea of manipulating time, using elements of photography to offer an aesthetic parallel to reality. In my recent work, this has involved the use of time-lapse to create movement from still photographs. I have used this technique in areas of advertising as it has an accessible, commercial appeal. For my final piece, however, I have utilised a combination of time-lapse and live-action to explore, understand and focus on a narrative.

The overall narrative itself reflects the concept of controlling or being controlled by time. This creates the notion of being “out of sync”, where nights are long and laborious and where the daytime passes so quickly that parts of it are missing.

Having previously completed a degree in photography, my work is heavily influenced by it. I see video becoming the principle way commercial photography is captured and I feel that lines between video and photography are blurring at an accelerated rate. I hope to continue working within both mediums, each area informing and shaping one another in a way that is exciting and challenging.
