MA Moving Image and Sound work by Alison Harvey

My work describes a journey through rural landscape at night.

Engaging with landscape is an important part of my identity and I use the hours of darkness to travel by foot or bicycle as an art practice. Night offers a different perspective, flattening the view and transforming the natural world into more elemental, abstract forms. Detail is lost until close at hand, briefly revealing itself before passing again into the shadows. Repeating the same journey imprints the landscape features to memory, but the conditionality alters and expands the cerebral experience on each occasion. I sketch to chronicle these events in response to the landscape.

Using animation allows me to express movement, combining my visual memory and my drawn responses. Using paint, ink and transparent materials on layers of glass I recreate elements from the journey.

The philosophy of this work is to remind a wider audience of the temporal beauty of night and to raise awareness that true darkness is under threat from the proliferation of artificial lighting.
