D&AD Yellow Pencil Award-winning design work by graduates of Norwich University of the Arts Luke Roberts and Simon Harry Cox is on the shelves of bookshops nationwide after their hardback cover concepts for a set of novels by H G Wells were commissioned by Orion Publishing Group.

The pair originally conceived the designs in the final year of study in NUA’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design course, from which they graduated in 2010. The work was entered into a national competition run by D&AD, an international group for professionals and students working in or around the creative industries, which picked it out to win a Yellow Pencil award last year.
The five book series covers some of Wells’s non-science-fiction work: Tono-Bungay, Ann Veronica, The History of Mr Polly, Love & Mr Lewisham and Kipps. The books have been released under the publisher’s W&N imprint.
NUA Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design Lucy Blazey says: “The books have strong visual ideas. The image printed on the retro newspaper is a key part of each story and relates to the objects which are seemingly randomly placed on top of the newspaper.
“The attention to detailing is paramount from the blurb being written in a newspaper editorial style through to the bar codes on the back being contained within an illustration on newspaper advertisements of the period.”
