Students design new logo for Norfolk Museums Service

Ten museums in the region are in the process of displaying new branding, thanks to the creativity of a group of Norwich students. The new identity launched by Norfolk Museums Service (NMS) has been designed by students at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA).

The project, which was commissioned through the University’s commercial department ideasfactory@NUA, has seen NMS overhaul its brand as part of a five year strategy to open the doors of its sites to wider commercial use, which include the Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse, the Elizabethan House Museum in Great Yarmouth, Ancient House in Thetford and the Norwich Castle Museum.

Under the new strategy various museum locations are being made available as venues for weddings, ceremonies, conferences, seminars and educational experiences. The brief given to ideasfactory@NUA was to make the core brand more commercial and sit appropriately within this very competitive sector.

Sarah Steed, Business Director of ideasfactory@NUA, says: “Our aim was to develop a logo which reflects the expert status of the work that the Museum Service carries out in a modern, motivating way. The students began by conducting a research visit to view the NMS operations at Norwich Castle before delivering seven different creative routes for review with the client. The selected arch logo is simple, distinctive and could only belong to Norfolk.”

The students designed a logo that echoes the distinctive shape of the ‘Bigod’ arch, a prized piece of Norman Architecture on the first floor of the Castle Keep. Using a simple, easy to read typeface, the ten segments of the arch represent the ten very different sites the service brings together, as well as the varied, excellent work that the Museum Service carries out across the county.

They showed great sympathy and understanding of the mission of the Service and responded with a range of high quality creative designs. We’re delighted with our new branding and have had very positive feedback from our stakeholders and staff.”
