BA Textiles overview
The BA (Hons) Textiles course provides a combined approach in which you will develop your creativity as a designer and strengthen your technical skills in a range of practices. You will be encouraged to experiment, explore new techniques and develop your practice as you grow in confidence as a textile designer. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the textiles industry and its place in society.
You will begin with an exploration of the fundamental principles of textiles. You will consider themes of visual research, colour, mark making and pattern construction. During the course you will continuously build on and develop your skills as new techniques are introduced.
You will become proficient in digital media and digital production as you gain experience in software such as Photoshop and Illustrator and techniques including CAD embroidery, laser cutting, digital weave, knit and stitch.
A series of lectures and workshops by visiting professionals will introduce you to opportunities in the textiles sector. Recent guests from industry include Ptolemy Mann and Sarah Angold. In your second year you will be expected to complete a work placement relevant to your practice, in the last year students have been to Jonathan Saunders, Margo Selby, Wallace & Sewell and Dazed and Confused magazine.
You will have the opportunity to visit and show your work at number of tradeshows and expositions including New Designers, London, Premiè€re Vision, Paris and design studios in New York. You will be encouraged to enter national competitions, which will provide a platform for showcasing your work and develop your ability to respond to briefs. NUA students have enjoyed numerous successes in competitions such as the Bradford Textiles Society Design competition and the Wallpaper History Society competition.
Throughout the degree course the emphasis remains on developing an approach and a skill set that are firm foundations for employment in the creative industries. Through this approach you are encouraged to find your own individual direction in textiles design and creation.
