Pedestrians walking up St Georges Street in Norwich this week have been amazed to see men in orange helmets and black suits hanging from ropes attached to the top of two 70 foot buildings belonging to Norwich University of the Arts.
The River Wensum-facing windows on the St Georges and Guntons Buildings, at the heart of the 165-year-old NUA campus, are being cleaned using rope access
This is not some new training activity for students or any kind of public art installation, it is a 21st century solution to a Victorian problem: the need for the cleaning and maintenance of some of Norwich’s most beautiful and historic buildings.
The River Wensum-facing windows on the St Georges and Guntons Buildings, at the heart of the 165-year-old NUA campus, are in need of some care. With the help of Norfolk-based AID Rope Access, windows are being cleaned using rope access hanging from the roof on ropes with a safety boat below. The job is taking two weeks and has the added benefit of giving passersby a little entertainment in the process.
AID Rope Access Commercial Director Jonathan Batchelor says: “Rope access is fast becoming known as a more efficient and environmentally friendly form of access. It has been a pleasure to be able to showcase these methods on such an historically important building in the city.”
