Dr Mark Wilsher

I am an artist, critic and curator with a particular expertise in relational art and the politics of social-engagement. This was the subject of my AHRC-funded doctoral research and also several feature articles for Art Monthly magazine (Plywood Utopias 2006, Beyond Public Art 2009, Out of Many, One 2012). I work in many media including sculpture, drawing and live performance and have exhibited at prestigious galleries including the ICA and Leeds Art Gallery. In 2007 I was awarded a fellowship at the Henry Moore Institute investigating British sculpture in the 1960s and ’70s. I also undertook research for a chapter in the catalogue for the landmark Royal Academy exhibition Modern British Sculpture (2011) on the connections between William Tucker, Julian Opie and Liam Gillick.

My work is based on the belief that art is a social process and takes place in a socially embedded context in relation to its various audiences. I work in a wide range of media including drawing, sculpture, installation, film, live performance and text, and have also curated other artists’ projects for galleries and public spaces. Some recent works include temporary collages made from magazine archives in institutional libraries (Gallery Shots 2013-14) and site-specific work at Outpost Gallery (The Yesable Proposition 2010). I often use existing images and objects as the basis for my own works, as a way of establishing relationships with the world beyond the studio. My current research into the public and media reception of contemporary art has resulted in an article (Lost & Found, Art Monthly 2014) and forthcoming exhibition project at the Minories in Colchester (Everybody is an Curator, August 2015).
