In the areas of Film and Media, there have been two strands to my work. Firstly, when time has permitted I have developed research in the area of American law and legal culture as reflected in screen fictions. Secondly, there is my track record in Film and Media education and related public engagement. Between 1998 and 2001 I was Director of the School of Media at the (then) Arts Institute, Bournemouth. The Institute was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 1999 in recognition of its contribution to education for the film and animation industries. In 2001 I was appointed to Norwich School of Art and Design with strategic responsibility for academic development and quality and, within this, to develop new provision in Media. This led to the introduction of new degree courses such as Games Art and Design (2004) and Film and Moving Image Production (2007). Externally, between 2002 and 2008 I was Chair of the Board of Trustees for Cinema City, Norwich, leading the cinema’s redevelopment into a 3-screen venue.

In the areas of HE strategy, quality and academic development, I have co-ordinated and authored two successive Strategic Plans for the University, together with sub-strategies for Learning and Teaching, Research and Consultancy, and the Student Experience. My strategic responsibility for quality has seen Norwich through the successful application and scrutiny for Taught Degree-Awarding Powers and two QAA Institutional Audits. My remit embraces the University’s overall programme for academic quality assurance and improvement and, as an awarding body, its internal regulatory framework. Externally, I have worked extensively with QAA and in the review of provision in other universities.
