BA (Hons) Textiles students have been introduced to natural dyeing techniques dating back to eighth century Japan through a demonstration by textile dyer and historian Sachio Yoshioka.
BA Textiles students observe a demonstration of natural dyeing from Sachio Yoshioka
Students were invited to take hands on roles in the demonstration, which showcased techniques for dyeing Japanese paper and silk fabric with Japanese panpas and tree barks. The session took place in NUA’s St Georges building on Thursday 18th November and was rounded up with the screening of Yoshioka’s DVD and a Q&A session.
Yoshioka has been published widely on Japanese art and its relation to Western art and revived a number of ancient weaving and dyeing techniques to create traditional colours and patterns, He has exhibited his works internationally including solo shows in Munich, Tokyo and London and has collaborated with Chanel to produce red colours for lipsticks.
The demonstration to NUA students was filmed by a Japanese camera crew as part of a documentary programme funded by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
